Baseball began in the early 1800s, but baseball gloves were nonexistent at the dawn of the favored American sport. In fact, baseball gloves did not surface until the 1870s, when players wearing them were looked down upon and thought of as weak.

The original gloves were merely a floppy leather padding meant to give players more protection and control over the ball. By the 1890s, however, baseball gloves became more common for players to use. Current players would not be seen without one.

Custom baseball gloves are a great way to enhance a player’s performance during a baseball game. Though sporting goods stores have many different sizes and styles of baseball glove, custom baseball gloves have unique advantages. Shelf gloves are good for beginning players; however, they are generically made to fit a lot of people with similar hand sizes. Not everyone is alike. Some players might need more finger room, or they may need the palm adjusted to fit better. This is why custom baseball gloves were developed.

There are many kinds of custom baseball gloves to choose from, with a variety of features to take into consideration. Color choices are one factor. When customizing a glove, many players like to make it look different than every other glove on the field. Different colors can be mixed and matched for the welting, lace and leather. There also are options like the back style and leather type to consider, plus eye-catching features like patterns and name embroidery. Some may even offer an optional index finger pad.

Custom baseball gloves encompass many potential facets. The web itself can come in seven different styles, including I-X, Dual Post H, Single Post, Trap-A-Sphere, Cross Weave, Cross Check and Cross Link. Each name corresponds to how the web looks; each option is fairly different. Several back designs are available to choose from as well. Custom baseball gloves can be designed with Open Back, Closed Back, Notch Back or even Velcro Adjustable Back designs.

Batting gloves are another type of baseball glove which can be important to the game. Unlike a regular baseball glove, the batting glove fits snuggly around the hand. Batting gloves improve the player’s grip on the bat and absorb the shock occurring when the bat connects with the ball. Without a batting glove, the stress the arm absorbs can do damage over time.

Most baseball equipment companies will create custom baseball gloves. Companies like Mizuno, SSK and Glovesmith specialize in creating gloves to help players perform better.
